Description

Using a drive controller to control a fire pump brings intelligence and optimization to the system, but in no way should it affect 100% reliability and performance in a crisis. Therefore, its design should be such that in the event of any problem with the drive, the system automatically and without interruption returns to full operation and direct from the network (Bypass).

Rama Original Brand Fire Drive controller Equipment

Startup with a drive is a method in which a variable frequency drive (VFD) increases the speed and torque of an electric motor at the moment of starting work in a controlled and gradual manner. In this method, instead of directly applying the rated voltage, the drive increases the frequency and voltage of the motor from zero to the rated value with a certain slope (Ramp-Up). The result of this process is to reduce inrush current, prevent water hammer, improve system stability and enable pressure or flow control through a PID loop.

  • The main power circuit equipment is selected from Schneider Electric brand to provide stable performance under heavy working conditions.
  • The drive electrical panel is equipped with a 7-inch Delta touch HMI user interface, which allows real-time monitoring of pump status, recording and displaying errors, selecting operating modes and control settings.
  • The control structure of the drive electrical panel is based on Siemens industrial PLC, and the control algorithms ensure the system’s performance with high accuracy and speed.
  • This electrical panel has a locked rotor protection system that prevents damage to the motor by detecting an abnormal increase in current. Also, the presence of internal alarms quickly informs the operator of emergency situations such as pressure drop or error.

Why is a drive controller used to control fire pumps?

Using a drive (VFD/Inverter) to control fire pumps is a very important and specialized topic that has vital advantages.

  1. Soft start: The problem with fire pumps is that at the moment of start, they draw a very high current (about 6 times the rated current) from the power grid, which causes a shock to the building’s power grid and causes a power outage. The drive slowly and linearly brings the pump up to rated speed and controls the starting current. (Usually below 110% of the rated current) which also prevents mechanical wear on the pump, pipes and fittings.
  2. Pressure control: In traditional systems, the pump operates at maximum power and excess pressure is wasted by pressure relief valves. The drive can adjust the pump speed by receiving a signal from a pressure transmitter to maintain a constant and accurate pressure throughout the sprinkler system, even as the output flow rate changes.
  3. Flow control: The drive can prevent sudden increases in flow and water hammer, which can seriously damage pipes.
